Canadian Citizenship

Becoming a Canadian citizen is the final step in your journey to fully integrating into Canadian life. Citizenship provides the opportunity to participate in the country’s democratic process, access one of the world’s strongest passports, and secure a permanent connection to Canada. It is a significant milestone that goes beyond permanent residency, offering stability, security, and new opportunities.

Applicants may qualify for Canadian citizenship if they meet the following requirements:

  • Be a permanent resident
  • Have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days)

Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person can count as one-half day toward physical presence, up to a maximum of 365 days.

  • Have filed their taxes, if they need to
  • Pass a citizenship test

Applicants aged 18-54 must pass a citizenship test, showcasing their understanding of Canada’s history, values, institutions, and symbols.

  • Prove their language skills in English or French

Applicants aged 18-54 must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French.

  • Admissibility

Applicants must not have any prohibitions, such as a criminal record, that would make them ineligible for citizenship.

  • Take the oath of citizenship (if applicable)
